海角吃瓜网鈥檚 student-run media outlet, The 海角吃瓜网ian, earned at is annual convention Thursday, Feb. 7 in Des Moines.

It is the second year in a row The 海角吃瓜网ian took home the association鈥檚 top news media honor.

海角吃瓜网 students won 22 awards鈥攊ncluding 12 first-place nods鈥攊n various media categories including writing, design, photography and social media. The contest included entries from private colleges across Iowa, including Buena Vista, Drake, Grand View, Loras and Wartburg.

The entries are judged by听professional journalists. This year鈥檚 panel consisted of members of the Indiana Press Association.

鈥淚 tell students all the time that journalism is not a contest,鈥� said Mark Siebert, director of 海角吃瓜网 Student Media and an assistant professor of multimedia communication. 鈥淚t鈥檚 simply telling your audience what is happening in their world. But it is nice when your work is recognized as some of the best in the state.鈥�

Among the multiple winners were Jayde Vogeler 鈥�18, Laura Wiersema 鈥�18, Alex Kirkpatrick 鈥�18, Austin Hronich 鈥�19, Randy Paulson 鈥�19, Zoe Seiler 鈥�19 and Gunnar Davis 鈥�20.听

Paulson is the editor-in-chief this semester while Wiersema held the position in 2017-18.

鈥淚 saw the achievement as culmination of all the hard work the staff has done this past year and our willingness to cover difficult issues,鈥� Paulson said. 鈥淚f we had only covered the feel-good stories last year, I don鈥檛 think we would have deserved the award.鈥�

Wiersma鈥攏ow a marketing communications writer at The Stelter Company鈥攁lso cites the staff鈥檚 resolve as the reason for winning the award.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 a testament to the standard the staff holds themselves to,鈥� she said. 鈥淪ometimes working on the newspaper can be a really thankless job, especially when you鈥檙e covering not-so-flattering topics for those involved. Receiving the award is a nice reminder that what you鈥檙e doing doing matters and the hard work you put in doesn鈥檛 go unnoticed.鈥�

Siebert said he was happy to see students recognized in all areas of media: writing, photography, design and online.听

鈥淐ommunication graduates today need to be able to do a little bit of everything, so our department makes sure our graduates are truly multimedia journalists.鈥�
